This one was workshopped with the sensational new novelist Alexander Yates who compared it to a Pokemon cartoon… written by Quentin Tarantino (Thank you, Alex). The story represented a foray into the possible future of gene-splicing, animal fighting, and pimping. It found a resting place in serial form at the webzine Fried Fiction in early 2011. Influenced more than a little by the classic stories “Sandkings” by George R. R. Martin and “Dogfight” by Michael Swanwick & William Gibson, I was coaxed by Mr. Yates to turn my co-protagonist, Zeebo, into a full-on antagonistic bastard (I must admit I feel a tinge of sympathy for the character even still). Of all the monsters that appear in this story, he could be the scariest because his want to succeed and make his mark in the world is so relatable.
