Kings5Challenged by my place of work, The Downtown Writer’s Center, with the proposition of writing a story in ten lines or less, I got to work immediately on what would become “Kings”. This piece of flash-fiction, if accepted, would be transferred to a giant placard and travel the streets on a city bus for a month or so as part of a larger advertising campaign for the DWC. Many of my colleagues crafted work of their own, mostly poetry, for the event. In the unseasonably warm winter of 2012, “Kings” toured the city of Syracuse on a Centro bus, being viewed by thousands of commuters, until it was removed and presented to me. My wife framed it and it was given to me as a Father’s Day gift. It hangs in my office to this day.
